Did YOU Walk Out?
March 21, 2018
On March 14, 2018, student all over the country walked out of their classrooms and went outside at 10:00 am to honor the 17 people that died in the Parkland High School, Florida shooting.
The Parkland high school shooting made people realize our world needs a change! 17 people lost their lives at Parkland high school on February, 14 Wednesday afternoon. Exactly one month after the tragic incident, students all across the country left the class they were to honor those who lost their lives, but were people just doing it to get out of class? Were students doing it for the 17 victims? Did they even know what they were doing it for?
Two 8th grade girls from WMS, Isobel Waller and Kaia Turrill, planned the walk out. “We based it on the other organizations that we had seen online and we set up a meeting with Mr. Smiley for every Monday [leading up to the walk out].” When asked what motivated them to participate in the walkout, Isobel stated,“ I was born in London and I’m used to there being gun control and hearing on the news that there had been a mass shooting, it makes me upset and the walkout is supporting that we need more gun control to stop these kinds of things.” Kaia also added, “And especially with the Florida shooting that had just happened and we wanted to respect what had just happened and raise awareness.”
We asked Carlie Carpenter how she felt about people talking during the walkout she said, “They were being really disrespectful and people were Snapchatting it.”
Alex Wiewiora, who didn’t do the walkout, said, “I felt like I would get in trouble if I walked out of class.” Many kids felt like they would get in trouble if they walked out of their classroom and outside.

I disagree with the statement that sitting outside in silence makes no difference, people did it to honor the people and show there support. guns are bad and they kill innocent people and animals, guns should be banned, completely.

I personally believe that the government are not allowed to completely take away our Second Amendment to the United States Constitution rights. Taking weaponry away from the good people, it will only make it accessible to the people with bad intents.

I feel like most kids had no clue what they were walking out for. I did not walk out because I believe that we don’t need stricter gun laws. If we celebrate the constitution than we should live by it. In the constitution the second amendment states that any body can have the right to bear arms. If you want stricter gun laws then you can find somewhere else to live because those are the rules that America goes by.

I did not do the walkout because my parents said I should not, but they did say that if I want to make a difference we all should be nice to everyone. So I think guns is not the problem people being mean to each other is. Like they say treat people how you would like to be treated. I don’t think it will happen again if we all treat each other equally and have respect for everyone.

I personally didn’t participate in the walkout. I didn’t do it to not honor the 17 kids who died but because of using that tragedy to push for gun control. I think that gun control will not help prevent these deaths. In fact, it will only make things worse. Countries like England have very strict gun laws, but they have a tremendous amount of crime there. Also, I think sitting outside in silence for 17 minutes isn’t going to change or help anything. If you want to make a difference or help then send money to help those people recover or write to your governmental leaders to stop gun control from being passed. I think the teachers should not have let the students outside.
