All About the SJ5K 2018!

Nathan Barnes and Luke Betts

This article is all about the SJ5K. For those of you that may not know, the SJ5K is being held on May 6th, 2018. This event has been in action in the PCCS region for 7 years and counting. The original SJ5K was made for a sophomore named Jesse Lindlbauer at Canton high school who showed no prior symptoms began to suffer from a near-fatal brain abscess. Jesse fought brain trauma, meningitis, and other complications brought on by the abscess.

We interviewed Mrs. Beth Savalox, the main coordinator of the SJ5K and also West Middle School 8th grade ELA teacher.

Why do you think it’s important for kids to run the SJ5K?

“It is important for kids to help others in their community, to see the power of the community, and to know that help is there for them if they need it.”

Why did you decide to take on the development of the SJ5K?
“There was a need in the community. I felt it was my responsibility to help.”

How many people normally register for the SJ5K?
“ Yearly we have record numbers; last year there were about 3,000”

What was your expected turnout or the very first SJ5K?”
“Our goal was 500.  We had 1800. It showed us that if you can make people care and make it easy for them to help, they will.”

The SJ5K has record numbers every year, and it could be even higher this year. So this year if you are not already registered you should consider contributing to the SJ5K and to help all nine families. Be a hero!
