Hurricane Maria was once a devastating category five storm. It was the fourth major hurricane in the 2017 Hurricane Season, and it didn’t hold anything back when it threw its hard punch at Dominica and Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico was left in ruins after Maria’s direct hit. Maria became the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in 80 years. Not only that, but Maria knocked out the power across the entire island, destroyed hundreds of homes, and caused lots of flooding.

Maria has caused at least 45 people their lives. The majority of the deaths happened in Dominica, but people in Puerto Rico are at risk of dying from the shortage of supplies. People are still trying to help as well.

Hurricane Maria originated as a tropical storm in the western Atlantic Ocean on September 16th. On September 18th, Maria evolved into a Category 3 hurricane in less than 24 hours. But the strength of Maria didn’t stop there, by September 19th, Maria had become a Category 5 storm.

Maria smashed into the Caribbean Island of Dominica and became the strongest hurricane to ever hit the island. And Maria effectively knocked out the electricity on the island too. Maria continued its rampage but weakened to a Category 4 hurricane before ramming Puerto Rico.

Even with Hurricane Irma and Harvey, Hurricane Maria makes it clear that the world won’t have a break until we’re safely out of hurricane season.
