Have you ever thought about animals that don’t have an owner? Many animals are left abandoned with no home everyday. The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) is located in Westland, Michigan at the Berman Center for Animal Care. MHS’s goal to save as many animals as possible. Westland Humane Society helps 3,000 injured stray and wild animals each year. Leaving these animals homeless is not an option.

The Humane Society focuses on stopping all animal suffering, such as finding homes for animals that have been abandoned or abused. Isabella Blake (thirteen-year-old, a 7th grader at West Middle School) states, “I do have a dog and I have had him for six years. His name is Scout and I love to snuggle with him and play with him.” We asked Bella how she feels about animals being abandoned. She said, “It’s very sad and it angers me.”

Westland saves animals from all over the Detroit area. Humane Society rescuers enjoy saving animal lives. The Humane Society also works on saving animals that are in a bad situation, such as dog-fighting and animal collector/hoarder houses.

Alayna Calma (a twelve-year-old 7th grader at WMS) says, “I got my first pet from an animal shelter and rescued my second dog, who was living in a garage.”

Nate Sulak, also a twelve-year-old 7th grader at WMS, says, “I got my dog in Westland at a Dog Food Company. I got a dog and I have had her for three years. Her name is Tootsie and she is 3 years old.” We asked Nate if he had ever visited the Humane Society he said, “I have visited the Humane Society to donate food to the homeless dogs.”

Shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes. Everybody should pitch in to help these animals. These poor animals are suffering due to human actions. You can help by donating to the Humane Society at 900 N. Newburgh Road, Westland, MI 48185.They accept money, food, and toys for all animals. Leaving these animals alone and homeless is not an option.
