The Lakeshore Food Club is a family-friendly food bank

At the Lakeshore Food Club in Ludington, Michigan, it’s not like your regular food bank. It’s built to look like a grocery store; so people won’t feel embarrassed to come inside.

There are shelves and shelves of food to choose from. To get into the Food Club, you need to have a membership. It is ten dollars a month to have a membership, and you get 100 points per month. You can spend points on mostly food. If some food ever expires, then it becomes free to the members. Certain foods are a certain amount of points. Like meat, might cost two or three points, and bread might cost one point.

In the backroom of the Food Club, is where they store all of the food and other things. There is a huge freezer, and a huge fridge to put food in to make sure nothing spoils.

Sometimes, they even get donated food, and there is so much of a certain food, some of it also becomes free.

Tina Summerfield, Volunteer at the Lakeshore Food Club states, “All of the food comes back through this big garage door in a truck and we seek out a lot of food rescues. Farmers drop off apples and different things when it’s the season for them.” After the Food Club gets more food, they have to repackage it.

It is this season for giving, so please get involved with your local food bank. Many families are struggling right now to put food on the table during the pandemic.
