As the college football season comes to a close, four of the best teams are selected to compete in the championship playoffs. It was a tough decision, for the six teams considered for the playoffs all showed tremendous strength and definitely deserve a spot in the playoffs. Alas, only four teams will make the cut. In this article I will tell you about the teams making it to the championship, controversy over a team that didn’t make it, and the future of the college football playoffs.
The first team to grab a spot in the playoffs is our very own Michigan Wolverines. With true grit and perseverance Michigan made its way to the number one spot with a 13-0 record and a triumphant win over Iowa making them the Big Ten champs. Michigan wasn’t the only team to secure a spot in the playoffs. The Washington Huskies also possessed an impressive 13-0 record and a win over Oregon making them the winners of their conference, the Pac-12, and gaining the number two spot.
In the third spot we have the Texas Longhorns. Texas, like our previous two teams, was the winner of their conference, the Big 12, after defeating Oklahoma State. With a 12-1 record the Longhorns earned the third seed in the play-offs. Texas will face Washington on January 1st in the Sugar Bowl in an epic fight for an opportunity to go to the National Championship game. The final team that made it is none other than the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama spectacularly beat the Georgia Bulldogs, breaking their 29 win streak, making them the SEC champions. Like Texas, Alabama held an outstanding 12-1 record, Texas’s defeat of the Crimson Tide in week 2 puts them ahead in the 3rd spot. The Crimson Tide will go to the Rose Bowl on January 1st to face Michigan to see which one of these hardworking teams will make it to the National Championship game on January 8th.
Though the number five team, the Florida State Seminoles, won’t be going to the playoffs they will face the number six Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl. There is a lot of controversy over Florida State being left out. Florida State went 13-0 and was the champion of their conference, the ACC. They are the first power five team to go undefeated and not make the playoffs. The Seminoles and fans are furious for being snubbed from the competition for they, as much as the other teams, deserve a spot in the playoffs. So much that Florida’s government is threatening to sue the College Football Playoff. Will they succeed?
Teams hopefully won’t have this problem next season though. Next season the College Football Playoffs will introduce a 12-team playoff giving eight more teams the opportunity to compete. The six highest ranked teams will automatically make it into the games. In the first round the top four conference champions will get byes. This new bracket will give more opportunity for teams to join.
I can’t wait to watch the playoffs unfold. These teams worked hard, but who will come out victorious?
