We know at least a little bit about our new principal, Mrs. Steckel, but what is her story? Her reason for being here? Being a principal at a new school is most likely hard, so how is she doing?
After graduating from Michigan State University, she became a principal at Plymouth High School. However, that school was very big. “I really missed getting to know students,” she says. “It was challenging to be the principal of a Class A high school with 2,000 students on a campus with 6,000 students.” She later added how she wanted to find a stand-alone school, with fewer students. Then, West came along, and she was offered the position.
Mrs. Steckel then talks about how West and Plymouth are pretty similar, but there are also some differences. “There are really so many similarities. At the heart of it, students are just students… just a little younger or older.” She then talks about the Away-for-the-day policy we have at West, and how she thinks it helps students focus more.
Mrs. Steckel has also talked about adding things to WMS. “I want to add a student advisory council. I had one when I was the principal at Plymouth and it was helpful to regularly be able to get student feedback or hear their needs.”
Welcome to West Middle School, Mrs. Steckel. We’re happy your here!
