Many of us might know about the solar eclipse on April 8th of this year, but where could we see it? What should we expect to see?
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon, our natural satellite, passes in between the Earth and the sun, obscuring the view of the sun from part of the Earth, totally or partially.
The reason people are looking forward to it and why it’s so important is because it is supposed to be the last total eclipse to touch North America until August 23, 2044, meaning that it will be the last solar eclipse for us to view for almost twenty years. The solar eclipse will pass from Mexico across the US, passing through states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Maine. The first place on the continent to see it is around the pacific coast of Mexico at around 11:07 AM (PDT). The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland around 5:16 PM (NDT).
If you are looking at a partial eclipse or eclipsed sun, you should wear eye protection, such as eclipse goggles. However, if you are seeing a total eclipse, you can enjoy it without any eye protection!
This eclipse is also different because it passes over more densely populated places than 2017. Cities closest to us in Michigan include Cleveland and Toledo, in Ohio. They are drivable distances, compared to other places. Some other great spots where you could see the eclipse include:
- Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico.
- Nazas, Durango, Mexico.
- Radar Base, Texas.
- Kerrville, Texas.
- Lampasas, Texas.
- Hillsboro, Texas.
- Sulphur Springs, Texas.
The April 8th eclipse is surely going to be a sight to see. I’m looking forward to it!
