In my opinion a hotdog is not a sandwich.
The first thing we need to know is what makes a sandwich a sandwich. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary “A sandwich has to have two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between the bread”. Hotdogs are one piece of bread folded horizontally and the filling is not on the inside, it is on top of the hotdog. When you bite into a sandwich you hold both sides and bite it kind of going in a horizontal way, when you bite a hotdog you only bite one side of the hotdog and work your way down the hotdog going vertically. I do understand why people would think that a hot dog is a sandwich because it has the basics of a sandwich: bread, meat and other ingredients, but it’s not a sandwich because a sandwich has two pieces of bread and stacked filling on the inside. That’s why I think a hotdog is NOT a sandwich.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a sandwich is defined as “ an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.” A hotdog is a sandwich because it is two pieces of bread with something in between. I do understand why people think it is a hotdog because a sandwich typically uses different types of bread, but if you rip the hotdog bun into two pieces, then you can put anything between the bread, like peanut butter, cheese, whatever you want.. That is why a hotdog is a sandwich.
