On Friday, April 4th, A Minecraft Movie showed in theaters. The very same day it released critics began advising people not to watch the movie due to its poor writing and predictable plot. Although, you may have heard from some people that, even though the movie was bad, there were still parts that made them laugh.
In my personal experience watching A Minecraft Movie, the movie itself was mediocre. I had low expectations going into the theater because of the trailers, and once the showing started, I was half right. I didn’t enjoy the plot much, because of its blandness. I predicted the ending rather quickly, and there was no suspense. The graphics were okay. At first, I didn’t like the oddly realistic counterparts of the original Minecraft mobs, but I eventually got used to it. The characters were underdeveloped. A few of them I liked, but the others felt detached. They didn’t grow as a person much, and kept most of their traits from the beginning. There were one or two exceptions but, other than that, I felt like they all pretty much stayed the same.
The entire time I’ve been saying negative things about the movie. It wasn’t horrible, because there were parts that made me laugh. It was a very unserious and silly movie, and I enjoyed that part. During the famous, “I Am Steve” line, the whole theater began clapping and Jack Black even got a standing ovation during the “Chicken Jockey” scene. The atmosphere was great, and because of all the internet culture and memes about the movie, it gave A Minecraft Movie a whole new feeling. It was humorous, and there were a lot of references to the Minecraft community. I used to play Minecraft when I was younger, which made me enjoy the movie much more.
So, should you watch it? It depends. If you’re a Minecraft fan, then yes. The movie is directed towards the players of the game. If you enjoy comedy, yes. This movie will most likely entertain you. I don’t suggest this movie to anyone who will take it seriously, or haven’t played the game. I can’t promise you’ll like it. But to me, although there were downsides, I was entertained and A Minecraft Movie will be something I’ll look back on in the future, and I’ll smile.
