Has SpongeBob Gone Downhill?

Johnathan Monteith, Reporter

Have you ever wondered what happened to your favorite shows? Maybe they were canceled. Well, this might happen to your favorite yellow sponge and his friends.

Don’t get me wrong, I love SpongeBob. I watch it all the time and it was one of my favorite shows.  Did you notice how I emphasized “was”? You can’t deny the new episodes are much worse than the originals. Let’s look where it all began, back when SpongeBob first aired. Seasons one through three were the best the show has seen in its many seasons because of one man, writer, and producer Stephen Hillenburg.

He left the show after season three. The ratings were never the same again and the show changed forever. For example, Sandy Cheeks she was a character that would help SpongeBob. Sandy was also a Texas cowboy, genius, and karate master. After season three, she became the science nerd. Another example is Patrick Star. He went from being smart in some areas and became absolutely dumb.

You see where I’m going with this? The show has improved since  the catastrophe of season 4, but now it is stuck in a spot where it is just not as good as the originals.  However, Nickelodeon won’t let SpongeBob go because Nick’s ratings would plummet.

Don’t just listen to me, listen to Spongebob lovers Martin Dobrowolski, Andrew Kostrzewa, and Addison Bielecki (all WMS seventh-graders). Andrew states “I guess it has gone up because of the animation.” He thinks the show has improved its animation. Martin said, “[The show] went slightly downhill, but it is still good”.  Addison said her favorite season is the third season.

Maybe Nickelodeon thinks that bringing old characters back like DoodleBob would make the show better?  We all know in the end, if the show keeps on this track, there are terrible episodes to come.
