My Journey Through Cheer

My Journey Through Cheer

Jenna Lanning

I started cheer when I was 5 years old wanting a hobby or a sport to do. My mom was a cheerleader in the past and introduced me to cheer. I became in love with cheer and winning as a team was so exciting. I would bring my trophies and awards to my school show and tell. Cheer is a lot of commitment, when you sign up for competitive cheer you are signing up for a full year and you can’t leave your team because everyone is important to have in the routine. With cheer, there is always something to improve on. I also take tumbling classes with cheer so I can learn new skills for the cheer routine and keep skills consistent. Right now I do competitive cheer and it is a lot on your body. My body aches when I wake up the next day after cheer practice. I have had back issues for 2 years and cheer makes it worse on me, I go to physical therapy 2 or 3 times a week because of cheer. But hurting isn’t something that would stop me from my passion. My cheer gym is my home away from home and I love to go and see my cheer family. My interviewer/ my cheer mom said “You should start cheer as young as possible.” You should start cheering as young as possible to get used to the time spent at cheer, conditioning, stretching, the toll on your body, and get used to the intensity. Every year cheer will be different because you learn more skills so you are on a higher level which means more practices and longer practices. Gabi Butler is my idol, she is on my favorite show on Netflix “cheer”. The show “cheer” shows the realistic side of cheerleading, they cheer at Navarro college. When I’m older I would like to get a scholarship so I can keep doing my passion.
