Schools have been closing due to the very cold weather and severe amounts of snow. With the harsh conditions, come new problems like icy roads and power outages. The increase in temperature has been deadly on the roads and we are coming into the season with the most snow days and ice days. To check if there is a snow day for your school check the snow day calendar.
Over 300 schools were closed last Tuesday due to the wind chill of -15. With that, parents too will not be 100% safe, because driving to work in icy conditions. Snow and ice reduce pavement friction and vehicle maneuverability, causing slower speeds, reduced roadway capacity, and increased crash risk. Some lives have been taken due to the ice and cars sliding into others.
To check if a snow day is coming in your district, look to see if there’s any winter weather advisory in your local area. Also look at the wind chill, which is one of the most important factors in calling a snow day. Windchill usually has to be around -10 to -15 degrees in order to cancel school. Or check if your area will get lots of snow and ice, because buses can’t drive as well in snow and ice to pick up students in the morning.
Some cold weather is great, but it can be very dangerous. In some situations, serious injuries or death could occur if you’re not careful like reckless driving. So watch out, because the freezes might catch up to you!
