Students need to immediately stop using phones in class. This is a really bad problem at West and it could cause West Middle School to become a phone free school. It is only the first month of 2019, and students are already getting phones taken away!

Right now, Mrs. Kulzycki, our assistant principal, sent an email out to staff regarding phone usage. Students should NOT have their phones at all during school hours because there is a bullying issue going on via mobile device communication.

Enzo Nocera, seventh-grader, is a student against using mobile devices in class. Enzo does not like when peers sneak their phone in class because it can get the phone taken away. Enzo said this can slow down the learning process. Enzo told me he has never been involved in a situation where he used his phone in class and he wouldn’t care if West became a phone free school because he does not even use his phone at all at school. However, he feels that when teachers take phone aways it is an invasion of privacy and it is comparable to stealing. 

So, why do student sneak their phone at school? They’re bored, phones are addictive, and they want to communicate with others. This is disrespectful because the teacher is trying to do their job and the teacher shouldn’t have to slow down the class to handle phone usage.

Students need to stop using phones in class or it could lead to a complete phone ban. The learning process is being slowed down and it needs to be stopped.
