The Experience of the 7th Grade Elective, Journalism!

Isla Jones and Brianna Stasa

Have you ever wondered, “What is it like to have the journalism class at West?” Because we sure have! When we were 6th graders and would watch the Friday 5, I would tell myself “That looks fun!” But now that I have Journalism, I can give you guys a run down of what actually happens.

Journalism is taught by the amazing Mrs. Horvath. She is also a 7th grade ELA teacher. Journalism is a semester-long class. When you are in 7th grade you have your electives during 3rd and 4th hour. So if you get Journalism you will have it during 4th hour.

In the actual class you can choose between two different things to do. Writing articles for Thebite.org or making videos for the Friday 5. When you choose to do articles, you have to write an article every week. You can write one by yourself or with a partner. In the beginning of the semester you have to come up with multiple article ideas. Then you resort back to that list every week. You can interview people for articles too! You just have to send emails to the person you will interview to inform them.

When you choose the Friday 5, you will be assigned a part to do for that week. For example someone will film and edit the intro, someone will film and edit interviews, and so on. Sometimes when you choose Friday 5 you can create your video alone or with a partner. You will also have to email the people you interview too!

Overall this is a very fun class! Very social and a great way to make new friends. I hope this article informs you about journalism!
