Currently, only 5% of our oceans have been explored, making 95% unknown to researchers today. What’s the solution? A subsea human habitat. The UK-based company DEEP has designed Vanguard, a “subsea human habitat.”
Problems with the current diving
Currently, scientists can only dive for an hour or two at most, making their time limited to conduct research. Along with pressure and costs for equipment, it becomes extremely difficult to reach new areas of research. The UK-based company DEEP has designed Vanguard, a subsea human habitat. “Certain areas of the ocean have never been explored; by making them accessible to researchers, we can open a whole realm of science.” Norman Smith, DEEP’s Chief Technology Officer and the lead engineer behind Vanguard, told AFP.
The solution
Creating a Deep-sea habitat designed for humans to live in for at least a week. The habitat called The Sentinel System is fully reusable and redeployable for any job it’s needed for. The Sentinel System consists of customizable and flexible subsea habitats that allow humans to live, work, and thrive anywhere within the oceans. This would allow us to reach new things no one has discovered yet! For now, the system can only go to about 20 meters (65 feet) underwater, but DEEP is already working on models that can go down to 200 meters (650 feet) underwater. Their goal is to have these systems fully launched by 2027.
Interior of the habitat.
By designing this system, DEEP is allowing us to explore where no one has. Soon, we will be able to see such beauty within the deep sea. With a new system, where will our curiosity take us?
