During the mission of Artemis II, the astronauts on board were flying through the orbit of the moon, and they spotted an unnamed crater on the western edge of the moon.
The crew has come back to Earth since, but the moment the crater’s name was announced was the same time that the crew broke the record for the longest distance from Earth traveled by humans.
The crater’s name was unofficially announced to be “Caroll”, named after the commander Reid Wiseman’s wife, Caroll Wiseman, who had passed away in 2020 from cancer. This tribute to Caroll was a memorable moment for two reasons: it was a record-breaking moment for science, but also a heartfelt moment for anyone who has lost a loved one. Caroll spent her career assisting new mothers and caring for newborns, a great service to many communities.
Breaking a record at the same time as naming a crater after their captain’s late wife is an astonishing achievement and moment that will be remembered for years to come.

Great article Tim. I didn’t realize they named the crater as they broke the distance record.

It’s an honor that you think I’m Ms. Horvath, but do you really think Ms. Horvath would tell you that someone made this article and it was actually her?! XD
